Wine in food hampers 'can help fight coronary artery disease'
Published on 25/11/2011

Buying food hampers containing wine for loved ones could benefit their health, as an expert has extolled the virtues of moderate alcohol consumption.

Linda Main, registered dietician and nutritionist at HEART UK - The Cholesterol Charity, said that several studies have shown that drinking a small amount of alcohol on a daily basis can reduce one's chances of developing coronary artery disease.

"Alcohol increases the level of high-density lipoprotein in the blood, a form of good cholesterol," the expert said.

Ms Main urged caution, however, stating that those who exceed safe limits could increase their chances of developing the condition.

She highlighted that wine made from red grapes can have additional heart benefits provided it is consumed in moderation.

Stuart Walton, chairman of the Circle of Wine Writers, made a similar point recently, pointing to various studies showing the health benefits of drinking wine, which include helping to fight against Alzheimers.
