Wine hampers could soon be stocked with varieties from regions of the world not traditionally associated with the beverage, as consumers are embracing new products.

A recommendation from the BBC's Saturday Kitchen led to a surge in sales of Indian wine, with the programme suggesting one example was an ideal accompaniment to curry.

And tastes appear to be broadening further, as editor of Decanter magazine Guy Woodward told the Guardian advances in technology and knowledge are resulting in more countries producing quality tipple.

"We're seeing more wines from far-flung corners of the globe – often regions without a long wine history - with some exciting results," he said, adding China, Slovenia and Santorini have all created award-winning drinks.

Ottawa Citizen wine expert Rod Phillips recently advised readers they should not attempt to be too precise when pairing wine with food, since meals typically contain a range of flavours and nothing is likely to be an exact match.
