Wine hamper fans 'should decant full-bodied reds'
Published on 23/12/2010

Hamper fans may want to decant wine that has a strong sulphur smell, one expert has noted.

According to an article in the Guardian, full-bodied reds may also need to be poured into a decanter to allow a bit of aeration to mellow the tannins.

"You might even want to decant a full-bodied white if you feel it's tasting a bit funky or not showing at its best," it stated.

The news provider claimed some beverages often develop strange aromas due to a lack of oxygen and if the fragrance does not fade when it has been put into a carafe then it could mean the tipple has been corked.

And the publication suggested there is no right or wrong time to decant wines - which are often found in luxury gift hampers - as in most cases transferring it just before it is served will do the trick.

Writing for the Scotsman.com recently Brian Elliot indicated people can choose red, rose or white when having turkey, as it can accommodate all three.
