Wine hamper fans may benefit from new technology
Published on 24/02/2011

Wine hamper fans may be interested to hear a new application has been developed that can help diners match their meal with the ideal beverage.

Web scientist Professor Deborah McGuiness has created a family of programs that can assist those partial to a glass of red or white with their menu choices by using semantic technologies that can calculate a combination once the user has input the meal details.

"With semantic technologies, we can offload more of the searching and reasoning required to locate and share information to the computer while still maintaining personal control over our information," she explained.

Her plans for the future include joining forces with restaurants in order for specific wine lists to be loaded onto the applications, in addition to individual preferences that could be linked to a list of favourites on a social media site.

Meanwhile, wine hamper lovers who are running out of cellar space have been advised by Beppi Crosariol in the Globe and Mail to store screw-top bottles upright, as only corked vessels need to be kept sideways.
