Wine hamper fans have defied the downturn
Published on 10/08/2010

There has been an increase in the amount of wine bought by American consumers, a study has indicated.

According to figures in the Beverage Information Group's 2010 Wine Handbook, 297 million cases were consumed in 2009 - a rise of 0.8 per cent on the previous year.

Domestic wine sales reached 227 million cases, an expansion of 1.8 per cent and imports were down to 74.3 million cases.

Eric Schmidt, manager of information services for the Beverage Information Group said the wine industry continues to look positive, despite the fact America is recovering from a recession.

"We expect to see wine consumption increase to 310.7 million cases by 2014," he added.

Managing director of lovethatwine.co.uk Hatim Dungarwalla recently claimed the average wine drinker is now more interested in learning about what they are imbibing.

He remarked wine enthusiasts now have a "more sophisticated understanding and palate" than they did five years ago.
