Volunteers in Raynes Park, London, handed out almost 300 Christmas hampers to vulnerable households in the area. As part of the Christmas Lunch on Jesus event, which is run by the Doxa Deo Christian Church, 290 low-income families received the goodies last Saturday (December 22nd), the Wimbledon Guardian reports, The body raised more than £7,000 in order to distribute the hampers, which included items such as a 4kg turkey, carrots, mince pies, potatoes and a CD. Ian Jacobs, a spokesperson for Doxa Deo, stated although the initiative began in North London in 2007, this is the first year it has extended to individuals in Raynes Park. "Doxa Deo is a church who want to see community transformation being a blessing to the community around us and that blessing overflowing to the city," he was quoted as saying. Minister for transport and Conservative MP for Wimbledon Stephen Hammond was among those packing and distributing the hampers. This comes after Prince Charles helped arrange goodies for the elderly during a recent visit to Bethnal Green and Peckham.
