Individuals planning to pack a picnic hamper and enjoy dining alfresco this summer have been given tips on how to make the experience a success.

Writing for the Times Colonist, cookery book author Eric Akis described how planning ahead is the best way to ensure a picnic is enjoyable.

The expert recommended packing bug spray, sun cream and a hat, along with a large blanket to sit on.

Dependent on the food that has been packed, people may also want to take plates, glasses, cutlery, a chopping board and a cleaning cloth.

Bin bags are also a must, as Mr Akis noted it is important to leave picnic sites as they were found, with all waste taken home or disposed of.

If there is unlikely to be shade at the picnic venue, for example on a beach, packing an umbrella may be a good idea to keep the sun's rays off food and participants.
