Spanish wine 'may be good for gift hampers'
Published on 25/02/2010

There are many high-quality wines originating from Spain, it has been claimed.

Writing in the Ottawa Citizen, Rod Phillips suggested that the country produces some very tasty grape-based beverages at good value prices, meaning that they may be a wise choice to add to gift hampers.

He noted that, as far as table wines are concerned, the "emphasis is clearly on red", with the best-known region being that of Rioja.

The area is located on the western coast of Spain and it has a long history of producing the drink.

Mr Phillips pointed out that bottles of Rioja are based on tempranillo, the country's "signature grape variety".

Beyond the region, however, there are many more areas and varieties of wine available to try, he said.

Another drink the Mediterranean nation is associated with is Sherry, which Mr Phillips stated comes in a "great variety of styles, from bone-dry to sweet".
