South African wine could be a good choice to add to gift hampers after it emerged more of it is now sold in Britain than French varieties.

Over the last 21 months, sales of South African labels such as Thandi Fairtrade Chardonnay have rocketed up 20 per cent to 12.27 million cases.

It is the first time the drink from the African country has led its European counterpart.

Figures for French wine sold dropped 12 per cent to 12.26 million - making just four cases of 12-pack bottles the difference between the two exporters, according to industry analysts Nielson.

The French variety has now slipped to fifth in the rankings of the British public's favoured tipple, trailing behind Australia, California and Italy as well.

Last week, Spanish wine was praised by Rod Phillips in the Ottawa Citizen, who specifically recommended the brand made in the western coast region of Rioja.
