Sommelier of the year 'might want' a champagne hamper
Published on 29/04/2010

The UK Sommelier of the Year might want to celebrate his achievement with a champagne gift hamper.

Christopher Delalonde has been given the accolade at the Westbury Gallery in the Westbury Mayfair Hotel in London.

The drinks specialist, who works at Sarment Wines in the nation's capital, won the Champagne Piper-Heidsieck UK Sommelier of the Year 2010 gong yesterday (April 28th).

Mr Delalonde was runner up in the 2009 competition, but said he aimed to take home the title this time around.

"Last year I came as a newcomer and finished second, this year I came here to win," he remarked.

As part of his prize, the expert will get to go on a trip to the House of Champagne Piper-Heidsieck in the French region, which will include a tasting session with winemaker Regis Camus.

It was recently reported that despite times of economic hardship in 2009, sales of the drink soared in Britain throughout the year.
