Smoked salmon hampers contributing to sales increase?
Published on 25/02/2011

Scottish salmon sales are on the rise, which could be due to the popularity of luxury hampers containing the delicacy.

According to the Scottish Salmon Producers' Organisation, the speciality has enjoyed record trade and a seven per cent rise in exports since 2009, rising from 7,251 tonnes that year to 7,743 tonnes in 2010.

The product was awarded a prestigious French government Label Rouge for its superior taste and quality in 1992 and the market for the foodstuff - which had previously been confined to Europe - is now being extended to the Middle East for the first time.

Scott Landsburgh, chief executive of Scottish Quality Salmon said: "Its consistent texture, flesh and flavour have allowed Label Rouge Scottish Salmon to hold this top quality award for the past 19 years."

Recently, Mr Landsburgh lambasted a Channel 4 broadcast that implied the delicacy is not farmed sustainably.

He remarked that the fish is responsibly produced and is healthy, nutritious and protein-rich.
