Screw tops and boxed wine gain respectability
Published on 26/09/2012

Screw-top bottles and boxes of wine have become increasingly acceptable among those who enjoy a glass or two of the beverage.

New research shows that bottles that do not have a cork are no longer frowned upon by the majority of Brits, with just 17 per cent of people turning their noses up at such brands.

Meanwhile, just 26 per cent of people claim boxed wine is inferior to that packaged in bottles.

Chris Wisson from Mintel, who conducted the survey, said: "Recent years have seen many wine-drinkers reappraising their perceptions and use of wine in differing formats and packaging styles."

He noted that boxed wine may be more appealing as it keeps for longer, while it also helps to reduce waste.

The research also revealed that people are increasingly open to bottles that have been produced in the UK, with 50 per cent of consumers claiming the quality has improved.
