Red wine 'could lead to a longer life'
Published on 03/08/2010

Luxury wine hamper fans may be interested to hear red wine is good for health and the drink can even help people to live longer.

Scientists in the US have discovered a plant extract found in red grapes can actually help the body to age slower than usual.

Researchers also discovered the ingredient resveratrol has anti-inflammatory factors and this means it may have an impact on strokes, heart disease and Type 2 diabetes.

However, further exploration may be needed on the results, as author of the study Paresh Dandona said a product containing 20 per cent of resveratrol was used, so there is a chance another substance was responsible for the positive side effects.

The research was carried out at Kaleida Health's Diabetes-Endocrinology Center in Western New York.

According to recent figures from the Wine and Spirit Trade Association's Quarterly Market Report, sales of rose wine have increased by more than 20 per cent in pubs, restaurants and bars across Britain over the last three-months.
