More people than ever before are expected to shun battling crowds on the high street this year and instead do all their Christmas shopping online.

Research carried out by BeforeWeBuy found a record 1.7 million individuals plan to purchase gifts from the comfort of their own home.

A six per cent rise in the number of online shoppers is expected, with Brits spending an average £600 on presents.

Co-founder of BeforeWeBuy Gabby Charles commented: "With family finances stretched, it’s a no-brainer for people to turn to online shopping and discount vouchers as a way to avoid paying full price, not to mention the hustle and bustle of the high street."

Those looking to find the perfect gift for family and friends without having to face shopping centres may want to consider ordering a Christmas hamper that can be delivered straight to a loved one's door.

According to the BeforeWeBuy research, books top the must-buy list for a third of shoppers, followed by clothing, toys, food and drink.
