Quality hamper beverages 'need not be expensive'
Published on 24/02/2011

Those who enjoy a glass of something from a wine hamper may be interested in learning that a decent red or white does not need to be expensive to taste good.

This is according to wine critic Andrew Campbell, writing for the Liverpool Echo, who explained consumers sometimes need to look away from the brands they are used to buying in order to find quality.

He noted that he had sampled bottles that cost £100 and did not, in his opinion, score any more points than ones of the same grape variety and region that were a third of the cost.

"Price is not a guarantee of quality. Many expensive wines will indeed be good or great. However wines do not need to be expensive to be fine," said Mr Campbell.

Another critic who has taken a step back from the old-fashioned view of wine is Andy Hadfield, whose Twitter review site is said to be erudite and user-friendly for those who do not claim to be experts, according to the Daily Maverick.
