Pensioner celebrates 21st birthday
Published on 29/02/2012

Friends and family of a woman from Stoke-on-Trent may want to purchase birthday hampers in order to help the pensioner celebrate a milestone age.

Today (February 29th) will see 84-year-old Jean Simms mark her birthday on the correct date for just the 21st time, the Associated Press reports.

With her day of birth falling on a leap year, the care home resident has had limited opportunities to celebrate and will technically turn 21 this year.

Traditionally, individuals are classed as an adult when they enter their early twenties and Ms Simms commented: "I'm hoping for the key to the door so my fellow residents and I can go out on the town."

However, unlike most 21-year-olds Ms Simms admitted she is more likely to stay home with a cup of tea and jigsaw puzzle.

Another 84-year-old who will be celebrating turning 21 is Macclesfield resident Bernard Hoyland, who told the Manchester Evening News he normally holds his birthday on February 28th.
