Rich red wine partnered with warming comfort food has been recommended to hamper enthusiasts who want to chase away the winter blues. According to Susy Atkins, writing for the Daily Telegraph, for those who enjoy snuggling down with a hearty plateful of casserole or sausages and mash, a few glasses of well selected wine can really add something extra. She claimed that the right bottle should invoke tastes of "autumnal berries and spicy, peppery oak". Ms Atkins described the "savoury characteristics" of European reds that make them a delicious accompaniment to stews and slow-roasted meats. "Leather and clove on the aroma; black pepper, cinnamon and a certain 'meatiness' on the palate," she said. For people who prefer their comfort dishes to be based around quickly cooked chops or steak, she noted that the fruitier flavours of New World wines would be better suited. Earlier this month, the expert advised against pairing red wine with artichoke recipes, instead suggesting that a medium-bodied, well-balanced white would be more successful.
