The use of social media in the wine sector is growing, a new survey has indicated.

According to a report by the Wine Industry Financial Symposium Group and the University of California-Davis Graduate School of Management, more than 80 per cent of respondents claimed they were using Facebook for business purposes, Reuters reports.

Furthermore, 64 per cent utilise Twitter, compared with just 21 per cent in 2009, while 52 per cent claimed they have a company blog, up from the 18 per cent last year.

A total of 83 per cent of those involved in the poll confessed they have had to be more flexible in terms of business plans, while 66 per cent noted they have had to reduce their workforce due to the current economic climate.

It was also revealed 80 per cent of consumers have confessed to buying more inexpensive brands during the recession.

Earlier this week, the European Court of Justice announced samples of wine and beer given to customers to promote products and increase sales will be exempt from VAT.
