Might the award-winning Gruyere cheese be the perfect inclusion in a gift hamper?
Published on 19/03/2010

An ideal addition to a cheese gift hamper could be the Gruyere variety, as it has been named the best in the world.

The Swiss dairy produce came top at the World Championship Cheese Contest in Wisconsin, defeating around 2,300 other entrants from 20 different countries.

Cheese maker Cedric Fragniere's effort won because of its creamy texture and smattering of herbs.

Bill Schlinsog, one of 30 judges at the event, said of Gruyere: "It's very smooth, it's aromatic and it has a very clean cheese flavour … it has a burst of flavour and then it settles down very nicely in the mouth."

Fellow Swiss Andeer Sennerei claimed runners up position with his Andeerer Traum fromage, while Austrian Alois Pesendorfer came third with his Gmundner Berg Premium.

Recently, the Cabot Clothbound cheddar - produced by the Kehler brothers - was hailed cheese of the month by Philly.com, which is a local news portal for Philadelphia.
