Might champagne gift hamper fans fancy a trip down under?
Published on 21/04/2010

People who enjoy gift hampers might want to head to Australia as it has been revealed that the champagne industry is booming down under.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Australians are downing the French variety of the drink at a rate that would put Europeans "to shame".

The news provider stated that the economic downturn only resulted in a slight dip in sales and the beverage is now growing twice as fast as the overall wine category.

Stephen Donohue, Dan Murphy's national merchandising manager, said: "I think some of the biggest champagne houses in Australia had their best year in calendar 2009."

The information outlet added that the country is now in the top ten champagne-drinking nations in the world, with nearly three million bottles emptied last year.

It was recently reported that a mystery reveller spent over £35,000 on the beverage in a London bar, leaving a tip of over £10,000.
