London to welcome first distillery in 100 years
Published on 05/10/2012

Hampers containing whisky treats may soon be stocked with beverages made in London, as the capital is set to welcome its first whisky distillery for more than 100 years.

The Londonist reports how the London Distillery Company is planning to begin production at its new site in a former Victorian dairy in Battersea next month.

According to historical directories, it appears the Lea Valley Distillery was the last in the capital and this had closed down by 1910.

The new distillery will produce "interesting" single malt whiskies in small batches that are to be aimed at the younger, "geekier" whisky drinkers, the founder Darren Rook stated.

He added that the hard water found in London will help the company to make a vast array of appealing spirits.

The first whisky will not be ready until late 2015, as British whisky cannot be sold until it has been aged in wood for a minimum of three years.
