Hampers fans urged to take care when opening Champagne
Published on 05/01/2011

Luxury wine hamper enthusiasts who enjoy a glass of Champagne need to be careful when popping the cork.

This is the according to Dr Patric Versace, an ophthalmologist at the Vision Eye Institute, who said he sees a lot of patients with eye injuries caused by the impact of a mis-directed bottle stopper, In My Community reports.

"The danger posed by a cork isn't really something people think about but they need to be aware and use caution when uncorking pressured bottles - a champagne cork can easily become a high-velocity missile," he added.

Dr Versace advised people to use a towel when opening a bottle of bubbly - which often feature in gift hampers - as this way when the cork pops out it will land in the towel.

In an article for DemocratandChronicle.com earlier this week, Holly Howell advised wine fans to drink new beverages made from grapes they have never heard of.
