People hoping to keep the cost of Christmas gifts at an affordable level without a substantial reduction in quality might find hampers are the perfect choice to keep relatives happy.

According to research conducted by Gocompare.com, 30 per cent of individuals are hoping to cut the cost of the festive season by reducing the number presents they give out.

"The festive season can add a significant burden on those who are already struggling to make ends meet," said the website's head of credit cards Jeremy Cryer.

Affordability was found to be the main reason 61 per cent gave for slashing their list of recipients, a problem that they may find a Christmas hamper provides a solution to.

Recent research by More Than indicated that more than half of the people surveyed would rather purchase a gift for a pet than a parent in-law, but despite this 70 per cent will still buy something for their spouse's mum and dad.
