Hamper screw-tops 'should be kept upright'
Published on 11/02/2011

There is no need to store screw-top bottles horizontally, hamper beverage drinkers have been told.

In fact, according to an article in the Globe and Mail, there are reasons to store wine without a cork vertically.

Beppi Crosariol observed keeping bottles upright, even if they are stood on the floor, keeps space available in the cellar racking for varieties that do need to be placed on their side.

"Wines sealed with cork, if they're going to be cellared for an extended time, must be placed in a horizontal position to keep the cork moist," he said, noting it ensures a tight seal against the neck of the bottle.

In addition, Mr Crosariol claimed it has not yet been decided whether the plastic inside of screw-tops can affect the taste of a vintage several years down the line.

Earlier this month, in an article for the Spectator, Simon Hoggart advised enthusiasts not to store white wine in the fridge to the point it is over-chilled and stripped of taste.
