Hamper fans may enjoy Middle East wines

Those who enjoy cracking open a bottle from their luxury hamper now and then may find they have a taste for wines from the Middle East.

Vintners from countries in that part of the world balance old and new techniques for producing the beverage, according to wine consultant Annabel Jackson, speaking to the Wall Street Journal.

Despite the fact the Mediterranean region is widely considered to be the birthplace of wine, records dating as far back as 5000 BC confirm production was also occurring in Turkey, Lebanon and Iran.

She noted some Middle Eastern reds or whites may evoke a hint of minerals or nuts, while drinkers should expect a more mellow flavour than the sharp taste of a French variety or a fruity Californian.

Hamper fans looking east for their wine may also be interested in adding a Georgian bottle to their cellar.

The Financial recently reported that the country is a long-time grape producer and is the former Soviet Union's second largest after Moldova.
