Hamper drinkers 'should follow toasting etiquette'
Published on 30/01/2011

People should always rise to a standing position when proposing a toast with wine, it has been suggested.

The gesture can help to catch the attention of peers and is in line with the correct etiquette, the Jamaica Observer reports.

Wine enthusiast Chris Reckord outlined this and other tips so people can ensure they are raising their glasses correctly.

When at a party or other gathering, for example, he stated that not until the host has saluted a guest of honour may anyone else do the same.

If a speech is required, Mr Reckord advises revellers to keep it swift.

"Keep your toast short and to the point. Avoid using big words," he said, adding: "The simplest words often sound the most sincere."

Earlier this month, Christopher Walers, writing for the Toronto Sun, claimed wine drinkers are becoming more sophisticated now varieties from all over the world are more easily affordable.
