Good news for hamper fans as cheese-rolling 'may go ahead'
Published on 07/04/2010

Gift hamper fans may welcome the news that a cheese-rolling event could still go ahead this year.

The Gloucestershire race was cancelled last month after fears for the health and safety of the large numbers expected to attend the gathering, thisisgloucestershire.co.uk reports.

However, Richard Jefferies - who is on the event's organising committee - has offered enthusiasts a glimmer of hope by announcing the festivities could still go ahead.

Angry reactions had accompanied the decision to abandon the cult fun-day when it was made public on March 12th.

Authorities were concerned for the well-being of people heading to Cooper's Hill, near Brockworth, after 15,000 individuals came to see the challenge in 2009.

It was reported last month that cheese-chasing had been embraced by residents in New Zealand as the region of Eltham staged its first-ever event on March 27th - with organiser Shaun McCarthy wearing a yellow catsuit to mark the event.
