Gift hampers 'may soon include new wine'
Published on 17/05/2010

An island based in the English Channel is to house a new vineyard, it has been revealed.

In news which may be welcomed by those with a passion for wine gift hampers, a version of the beverage is to be produced on Brecqhou, the AFP reports.

Commenting on the project, Henry Strachey, a former fine art dealer, said: "We're producing a lot of good, successful wine in England now, so why not here?"

The first vines were planted in April by a team of French labourers and technical know-how has been provided by expert Alain Raynaud, who heralds from the Bordeaux region.

A number of grape varieties are being cultivated, including chardonnay, sauvignon, pinot blanc and pinot gris, as well as pinot noir and gamay.

According to Mr Raynaud, nothing has been left to chance.

It is hoped that the vineyard will produce around 40,000 bottles of the drink each year.

Meanwhile, wine enthusiasts will be among those present during an international fair based on the tipple, which is taking place in London this week.
