Giving fruit baskets may be one way in employers can help to address a growing problem in the UK with chronic diseases affecting their workforces.
According to a new report, such health problems as obesity, cancer and diabetes are costing the UK economy an estimated £21.6 billion a year in lost productivity.
The Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index noted the burden of chronic conditions is growing, with workers who are in good health less likely to miss days of work each year due to illness.
"Employers who recognise the importance of improving well-being at the workplace are most likely to gain a competitive advantage," Healthways president and chief executive Ben Leedle explained.
Fruit baskets may also be given as gifts after the Scottish Health Survey 2010 showed that obesity rates in the country climbed last year, with no change recorded in the proportion of adults or children consuming the recommended daily five or more portions of fruit and vegetables.
