Fruit baskets could help to address Scotland's growing health problems
Published on 28/09/2011

Individuals in Scotland with poor diets could benefit from fruit baskets after a new survey found people in the country are not eating the recommended daily amount of fruit and vegetables.

According to the report from the Scottish government, no significant change has been witnessed during the past year in the proportion of adults or children in the nation consuming five or more portions of fresh food.

The Scottish Health Survey 2010 also revealed that obesity rates have increased since 1995 to 28.2 per cent last year, while 65.2 per cent of adults were deemed to be overweight.

Published by the Scottish chief statistician, the figures demonstrate a decline in the proportion of people drinking to excess, driven by a fall among female drinkers.

Fruit baskets may also be in greater demand after a study by Sainsbury's recently found that bananas, apples and oranges appeared in a list of the top ten foods that provide the best cost to happiness ratio.
