It may be too much to ask to ditch meat and fish altogether, but a recent study has shown that an entirely vegetarian diet can have a greater positive effect on your health.

The study showed that going meatless gives people a 32 per cent lower heart disease risk with healthy blood pressure, cholesterol and body weight all cited as beneficial side effects of a vegetarian diet.

A total of nearly 45,000 men and women living in England and Scotland took part in the study, which was published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Researchers sought to compare a range of diets and their impact on overall health over a course of 11 years.

Of course, if you can’t stand the thought of giving up meat completely, then an alternative would be to increase your intake of fruit and vegetables and ensure you have a balanced diet.
