Sending a loved one a hamper filled with chocolates, champagne and flowers may be the perfect way to celebrate a special occasion, with flowers said to be a lovely gift.

Bespoke floral designer Michael Pooley explained how a bouquet is the ideal present for friends and family members at Christmas, for birthdays or even graduations.

"Flowers are so individual. They reflect what people feel about the occasion or purpose and there's nothing like receiving a bunch of flowers when you least expect it," the expert stated.

Those who are lucky enough to receive a hamper packed with treats such as chocolates and flowers have been advised how to prolong the life of their arrangement.

Mr Pooley recommended cutting stems at an angle and at least two centimetres from the end before placing flowers in a vase.

Meanwhile, water levels should be checked on bouquets that come in a box or bag, as these are only intended to have enough water to last overnight.
