Fine wine gift hamper market "is astonishing"

The last six months of the fine wine market have been "astonishing", one expert has claimed.

In an interview with BBC News, Simon Staples, sales director at wine merchant Berry Brothers and Rudd, said the industry has continued to grow in strength.

"People have always enjoyed fine wine. But as new markets emerge it has got stronger and stronger. We have never seen it this bullish," he added.

The firm has a 1978 Richebourg Burgundy for sale, which costs £11,250 per bottle or £135,000 for a case, but employee Joss Fowler noted that although it seems like an absurd amount of money, it was made by one of the "first legendary winemakers".

He explained many buyers purchase it just for the pleasure of knowing it is sitting in their cellar.

Reuters recently reported a survey by the Wine Industry Financial Symposium Group and the University of California-Davis Graduate School of Management revealed more than 80 per cent of people in the wine sector - which may include those who provide products for luxury gift hampers - now use social media for business purposes
