Enthusiasts to enjoy a hangover-free wine hamper?
Published on 15/02/2011

If the effects of a science experiment could be reproduced, there is a possibility enthusiasts may be able to enjoy wine hampers without having to worry about a hangover.

Alix Pichon, a 17-year-old Queensland schoolgirl, beat 4,000 other entrants to claim first prize at the BHP Billiton/Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization science awards, the Herald Sun reports.

In an experiment involving peach varieties of the beverage, the youngster discovered if the alcohol content is over 13 per cent, the liquid can be kept for up to six weeks without the need for hangover-inducing preservatives.

Through her work Alex managed to amass 12 buckets full of wine, but was too young to sample the produce herself.

"It's a bit of a shame because obviously you make wine to drink it, but unfortunately in the classroom experiment we're not 18," she said.

Earlier this month, researchers at the University of Nottingham and the University of Northampton received a grant to begin detailed research in order to understand more about another hamper favourite – blue cheese.
