Drinkers to lose weight with wine hamper?
Published on 24/06/2010

Those who like to receive a wine gift hamper may find they experience another benefit apart from the taste.

New research has suggested red wine has anti-obesity properties.

Investigators from the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Paris looked at the effect of the compound resveratrol - found in the beverage - on primates.

They investigated the effect of the dietary supplementation on the metabolism, weight and energy intake of six mouse lemurs.

Lead author of the study Fabienne Aujard noted the animals increased their resting metabolic rate by 29 per cent and decreased their energy intake by 13 per cent after being fed the supplement.

She added the work may suggest "it could be a good candidate for the development of obesity therapies".

Earlier in the week, researchers from Ronsselaer Polytechnic Institute claimed resveratrol can help reduce a person's likelihood of developing Alzheimer's disease in their later years.
