Dark chocolate in Christmas hampers 'can benefit a person's heart'
Published on 18/11/2011

Those buying Christmas hampers for loved ones this year should not worry too much about the dark chocolate contained in them, as it has a number of health benefits.

The Daily Gleaner cited claims from Harvard Men's Health Watch that while chocolate is generally considered to be bad for people, this is not the whole story.

According to the source, dark chocolate is a rich source of flavonoids, which have several health benefits.

Among them is the fact that they have anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic and cancer-fighting properties.

In addition, flavonoids prevent certain cholesterols from oxidising into their most harmful forms, which will help protect a person's heart and stimulate increased production of good cholesterol.

According to a study conducted at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, women who consume a lot of chocolate are less likely to suffer a stroke than those who abstain.

Those who consumed eight grams of chocolate or less per week were found to be at the highest risk, the research found.
