Could hampers help avoid giving unwanted gifts?
Published on 16/01/2012

Giving someone a Christmas hamper could be one way of ensuring friends and family do not end up receiving unwanted gifts.

A new survey by online auction site lovelyjubbly revealed Brits hoard enough redundant presents to fill Wembley Stadium 11 times over.

It was found that one in three people receive an unwanted item each festive season, while seven million individuals were given duplicate presents.

Commissioner of the survey and auction expert Gareth Whipps explained how £124 billion is spent on gifts at Christmas.

He added that £900 million worth of unwanted presents are thought to be "sitting there, not doing anything and possibly hidden in the back of a cupboard".

The study found more than three-quarters of respondents admitted to being too polite to express their feelings if they do not like an item they receive.

Meanwhile, the main culprits for poor gift giving are extended family members.
