Could hamper fans soon be sipping Chinese wine?

Hamper wine enthusiasts looking forward to tasting Chinese varieties may still have a while to wait, it has been suggested.

The Chinese wine industry is currently undergoing considerable growth and, if it continues, it could outsize Australia's output in the coming years, the Herald Sun reports.

However, commercial wine writer Denis Gastin commented that internationally, the Chinese have only shifted small quantities of their beverages.

"But that is not the focus of the industry at the moment. The motivation was more to show Chinese drinkers local growers could compete internationally," he said.

Mr Gastin added there is an increasing trend in the nation of the drink being seen to denote status.

Taking into account a population of 1.3 billion, this could one day lead to China becoming a giant wine market on the global scene.

Earlier this month, International Wine and Spirit Research named France as the biggest wine producer in the world.
