Could fruit baskets help fight obesity epidemic?
Published on 02/12/2011

Buying fruit baskets for friends and family could give their health a significant boost, as many people in the UK are getting fatter as a result of poor dietary habits.

According to Tam Fry, spokesman for the National Obesity Forum, women in particular are getting larger, which is partly due to the fact that education on healthy living and good food has been neglected in the UK for 15 years.

The result of this is that people are consuming ever-more unhealthy options and the obesity problem will not go away until this issue is addressed.

"We are becoming - if we haven't already become - a fast-food nation and we have forgotten entirely what people in other countries have not forgotten - and that is the value of cooking, eating slowly and using food as a social gathering," Mr Fry added.

Recent figures from the EU showed Britain has the highest number of obese women in Europe.
