Twice as many people will buy Christmas hampers and other gifts for loved ones via mobile devices this year than in 2010, new research has found. According to a survey by Webroot, 50 per cent of those questioned intend to shop in this way, compared to 22 per cent 12 months ago. The convenience and portability of such technology were cited as the major plus points of smartphones and tablets. Just under half of UK shoppers plan to explore bricks-and-mortar outlets to do their Christmas shopping, compared to 68 per cent of consumers in the US. Chad Bacher, vice-president of mobile solutions at Webroot, said those planning to buy good via mobile devices must ensure they have adequate protection in place. "Mobile security services are now a must - lost device protection, secure web browsing and anti-malware provide essential protection," he added. GetSafeOnline.org made a similar point recently, claiming that mobile devices are being increasingly targeted by fraudsters.
