More money could be spent on Christmas hampers this year after new research showed consumers are reluctant to cut back on their festive expenditure despite the difficult economic climate. A study by Kelkoo found that an average of £682 will be spent by Brits over the Christmas period, a rise of one per cent compared to last year, the Press Association reports. UK shoppers will spend more than their counterparts in Sweden, Germany, Italy, France and the Netherlands. The majority of expenditure will centre on gifts - which could include Christmas hampers, food and drink, and decorations. Chris Simpson, chief marketing officer at Kelkoo, told the news provider that Brits intend to enjoy the festive period. "Although trading conditions are still challenging this year, it seems consumers are reluctant to cut back on festive season spending," he added. A recent survey by M&S Money found that nearly half of people in the UK fail to stick to the budget they set for yuletide expenditure.
