Consumers to buy food hampers online this Christmas?
Published on 14/11/2011

A significant number of food hampers could be bought via the internet over the festive period, as new research has suggested that consumers will spend more than £7.75 billion online in December.

According to the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales index, half of this sum will be spent in the first two weeks of the month, following a steady increase in activity in November.

The survey highlighted that 35 per cent of people plan to spend more via their mobile phones than in previous years.

David J Smith, chief marketing and communications officer at IMRG, said that retailers need to adapt to the trend.

"Consumers want choice and continually demonstrate their willingness to switch channels to suit their specific circumstances and secure the best deal for themselves," he added.

Neil Shah, director of The Stress Management Society, said recently that the key to avoiding stress in the run up to Christmas is to get most tasks - which could include buying food hampers - done early so there is no rush at the end.
