Community hero donates hamper to charity
Published on 07/02/2013

A selfless fundraiser has raffled a special hamper given to him in recognition for all his hard work.

Darren Jaye, from Stourport in North Worcestershire, has raised thousands of pounds for the Poppy Appeal over the last few years, Worcester News reports.

Over the past three years, Mr Jaye has helped raise over £40,000 for the Royal British Legion charity which works to provide support to serving members of the Armed Forces as well as veterans of the Legion.

The 43-year-old was crowned a community hero by the local public and received a special hamper in recognition for his work for the appeal.

However, in a sign of his dedication to the charity, the ex-military man decided to raffle off his winnings in order to raise a further £35.

Speaking to the news source, Mr Jaye said: "I feel somewhat embarrassed because it’s everybody else that’s put the effort in. It’s the people who stand on the street corners with a collection tin and tray of poppies on a cold and wet weekend, and the people giving that deserve to be recognised."
