Christmas hampers better gifts than expensive jewellery or electronic goods?
Published on 24/11/2011

Buying Christmas hampers for loved ones this year may be better received than expensive items that lack the personal touch.

According to psychologist Cliff Arnall, the idea that people have to spend a small fortune over the festive period is absurd, as it is not the amount that is spent that is the important.

Rather, it is the thought that has gone into the presents, which could mean a carefully selected Christmas hamper has a greater impact than an MP3 player or a pair of earrings.

"You don't have to spend a lot of money, as expensive gifts are often forgotten. It is the gifts that people have thought about and carefully considered that are remembered," Mr Arnall said.

He recommended consumers think carefully about what they spend their money on before parting with it.

According to research conducted by Opinion Matters on behalf of Conrad Koh Samui, it takes a fifth of people until March to pay off their Christmas expenditure.
