Christmas 'a tempting time for thieves'
Published on 17/12/2012

Homeowners have been reminded to take care over the Christmas period and ensure they do not attract attention from opportunistic thieves by leaving expensive presents on view.

Halifax Home Insurance warned that each December there is a spike in claims following burglaries across the country.

In 2011, 1,382 claims were made, with an average of nearly 50 made per day over the festive season.

Those who purchase hampers to give as gift or who receive a gift basket this Christmas may want to ensure they keep their luxury presents out of sight and leave a light on when leaving a home unattended.

Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager at Halifax Home Insurance, said: "With many people out at Christmas drinks parties not returning home until late at night, it can provide the perfect opportunity for thieves to slip into houses unnoticed and have their way with the rich pickings."
