Cheese rolling festival for hamper fans?
Published on 20/01/2011

Cheese rolling may have been saved from disappearing due to a proposal to turn the tradition into a two-day festival-style event.

The practice takes place on a site in Gloucestershire, which is suitable for only 5,000 people but features a perfect steep slope for the dairy product to be rolled down.

After last year's celebration was cancelled when excessive crowds and traffic posed health and safety problems, the committee has been discussing the staging of a new event which still revolves around the sport.

Spokesman Nigel Thomas commented on the importance of preserving one of England's unique examples of culture.

"Whatever the format, we are determined not to lose the atmosphere, heritage and tradition which have made this such a special event," he said.

In a previous break from tradition, during the rationing period of 1941-1954 a wooden substitute had to be used in place of an authentic Double Gloucester cheese.
