Champagne winemaker wins top award for beverage that often features in luxury hampers
Published on 28/09/2010

A winemaker from Champagne house Piper-Heidsieck has bagged a prestigious title at the International Wine Challenge.

Judges named Regis Camus as the Sparkling Winemaker of the Year and it is the fifth time he has won the award.

Mr Camus said he has a "loyalty to House style and a desire to share one's passion".

Piper-Heidsieck - which is often featured in luxury gift hampers - was first established around 225 years ago and has a reputation for being a classic champagne.

According to its website, the beverages it creates are "radiant and crisp" and play with "freshness, vivacity and fruit".

More than 10,000 samples are tasted by 465 merchants during the International Wine Challenge.

Earlier this week, co-owner of London restaurants Texture and 28-50 Xavier Rousset stated the use of iPads instead of paper wine lists could undermine the sommelier's role.

He noted the trade has worked hard to establish relationships with wine experts and the electronic devices could undo all of that.
