A former speed skater has celebrated his 100th birthday with a gift hamper of Sussex food products.

David Beattie from West Sussex marked the impressive milestone with friends and members of the local council, reports the Mid Sussex Times.

Mr Beattie credits his one hundred years with his active lifestyle - he keeps himself in shape by walking regularly and says that he doesn’t feel any different now that he’s a century old.

"I try to keep active. I’ve had a good life and I don’t feel any different now that I’m 100, the only thing is my memory isn’t what it was, but I’ve been very lucky really," he told the paper.

Mr Beattie was born in Scotland but moved to London during the war where he worked on engineering projects. He also competed as a speed skater and even managed to get some medals before picking up an injury.
