Carmarthenshire-based cheese firm named British Supreme champion
Published on 27/09/2010

A Carmarthenshire-based cheese company has been named as the British Supreme champion.

Caws Cenarth beat off competition from more than 170 cheese-makers to win the prestigious accolade at the British Cheese Awards, BBC News reports.

Carwyn Adams owns the firm and said he hopes the title will help him expand his business and provide cheese - which is often featured in luxury gift hampers - to restaurants, hotels and independent delicatessens.

"I am obviously very pleased to win the supreme champion. We do export mainly to Holland and I am going to see if we can increase those exports," he added.

The company was established just over 20 years ago and produces approximately 100 tonnes of semi-soft washed rind cheese a year.

According to a recent article in the Daily Telegraph, exports of British cheese to Germany increased by 20 per cent during the first half of this year and were worth around £392 million, compared with £326 million in 2009.
