Canadian wines do well at awards
Published on 12/08/2010

Fortified wines and those that originate from Canada have come out on top at the Decanter World Wine Awards, something which may interest wine hamper fans.

According to Decanter.com, four out of five entries that hailed from Port and Madeira attained a gold, silver or bronze medal.

However, just a quarter of entries from Loire Valley and Bordeaux received an award, with just 38 varieties from Loire winning a medal.

Chair of the Loire panel at the awards Jim Budd said this year's entries of sweet wine were "weak".

"Obviously we were disappointed that the wines did not show better. There were very few wines that really sang," he added.

Canadian wines did well at the ceremony, with three out of four of their products receiving praise.

And Australia topped the leader board, winning 33 golds in total.

In an article for the Canadian Press, James Nunes, managing director of marketing at Sutter Home Family Vineyards, claimed Moscato wine is increasing in popularity.
